My job in DUOS(brand name of Dual Standby) team was to design a user experience interface and interaction, which can fulfill consumer needs. DUOS was firstly released in China as a sole model (W629, D888). DUOS won the Best Brand Prize in 2008, and it currently records more than 4 million sales in Russia and Europe. I designed Handover function, which was included in the first commercial TD-SCDMA mobile phone L288. This function allows a mobile phone to automatically convert between TD-SCDMA and GSM network as the user environment changes. The mobile phone was finally selected for the second official mobile phone of Beijing Organizing Committee for the Games of the Olympiad (BOCOG).

Dual Standby Model recognizes the connection environment (Context-Aware) and automatically set default mode to CDMA(TD-SCDMA) or GSM. For example, it automatically connects to cheaper connection available in anywhere users go on a business trip. It can automatically shuts down the business communication channel after the users’ business hour if they use it for both business and personal purpose. Developing this, I also researched other fun and easy functions additionally, such as a privacy protection that hides all the call histories that were received to personal SIM. More personal settings like RSSI, icon, ringtones are also available for each SIM. In SIM switching process, I applied intuitive graphic user interface (GUI). With kind help of Beijing Research Center, I went back and forth between Beijing and Shanghai to research the user environment and communication style. Finally, I could find out what was the problem in interaction, and then I was able to develop the adaptive interface that works well with the environment of China. From that experience, I realized that none of a product, a technology, a design, or an environment was dispensable.

Achievement - The first innovative Full Touch User Interface of SAMSUNG Electronics.
                      - UX Group leader received Proud SAMSUNG Award
Main Concept Digilog : Digital + Analog, Analog-digital-based emotions indicate the flow of the convergence era .
The meeting of Technologies and sensitivity create, Emotional Design, Personalized Haptic feedback, Widget Service
Methodology Design methodology in SAMSUNG PLC
Technologies Resistive overlay touch screen, Proximity sensor, G-sensor, Ambient light sensor, Accelerometer

Following to the development of Black User Interface in 2007, I took part in full touch 'Haptic' phone project in 2008. In this project, I contributed the UX team leader to receive Proud Samsung Faculty Award. 'Haptic' phone is a combination of digital and analog. It is a delicate adaptation of the Haptic feedback and an analog metaphor that users are familiar with. While 6 months of development, UI developers all around the world got together everyday to review the model, and the model was modified for dozens of times a day. The form factors, or needs for interface from various countries and businesses were all different, and even how they perceive information was different in different cultural areas. Where were those differences come from? It brought up a question to me of how and why they perceive a device or technology differently, and the question came to my future research list.

Project Name Sweeping Command

Project Period Apr.2007-Jan.2008

Role in the Project User-experience designer, Implementaion of interaction, Publish UX design guideline

Achievement  Personalized menu operation, Affective mobile phone application on full touch panel
Main Concept Fun & Easy access on touch screen, Emotional Operation

Technology Resistive overlay touch screen

Sweeping Command is an application developed by myself for touch panels. I came up with a concept and designed the UI in 2007, and it was applied to SCH-W699 (project Mentor) model for China in 2008, and in global Touch Haptic 2 & SCH-W850 model in 2009.

: Initial concept of Sweeping Command targeting China

Any application can be reached at once by registering a drawing pattern and mapping the pattern with the application. It is a one key operation action by Sweep. The personalized menu setting allows dial, memo, music, phone number search, messaging, and more. Conducting this research, I could obtain deeper understanding about how touch panel input works. This project has a great meaning to me because I produced many ideas for S/W applications like sketch memo and handwriting, and I could learn and master touch interaction principles.
